NAURU: HISTORY OF OUR AIRLINE

History of Our Airline

Our AirlineNauru first looked at establishing her own airline at the granting of independence in 1968. A major motive for the founding of the airline was the need to improve communications in the Pacific, both for Nauru and her neighbours. This required an airline that would bridge the distance between Nauru, her neighbours and the major mainland centre of commercial and geopolitical importance to the Pacific Islands.

In 1969 Nauru achieved agreement with the Australian government for a direct air link between the two countries. The first Air Services Agreement between Australia and Nauru came in to effect that year. The initial route was from Nauru to Brisbane with stops at Honiara and Noumea to refuel.

By its 10th anniversary the airline was servicing six central and northern pacific destinations as well as Japan, Hong Kong, Manila and Singapore in South East Asia.

From its very early days, the airline adopted the Australian Air Navigation Standards, which were considered the highest in the world. This continues to involve rigorous and regular training for its crew and special modification to equipment to cope with Pacific Island flying.
