Christmas Islanders participate in several inland activities which range from cultural, religious and island specific celebrations.
Cultural Activities
The island have public holidays similar to the mainland of Australia but there are variations to cater for the cultural differences. The holidays include New Year's Day holiday, Chinese New Year's Day, Islamic New Year's Day and Hari Raya Puasa. Everyone respects and enjoys each other's celebrations.
Religious Activities
There are several religions practiced on the island and each religious cereomony is celebrated by all. Such activities revolve around the birth of Christ, the Hungry Ghost Festival, Budda's birthday and Mohammad's birthday.
Island Specific Activities
There is one day of the year, which is celebrated by all on the island; Territory Day. This day sees the whole inland getting together to celebrate the island becoming a Territory of Australia. The island celebrates by organising public auctions to raise money, gatherings for a fishing competition, a canoe race and and a car rally.
