Top Countries With the Most Academy Award For Best International Feature Film (1947-2022)
The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film (formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film) is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The award was first presented in 1956, and it is one of the most prestigious awards given by the Academy.
The award has gone through several name changes over the years, but its criteria have remained largely the same. In order to qualify for consideration, a film must be longer than 40 minutes and must have been released in its country of origin during the preceding calendar year. Each country is allowed to submit only one film for consideration.
The selection process involves two rounds of voting. In the first round, all eligible films are viewed by members of the Foreign Language Film Award Committee, who select a shortlist of nine films. In the second round, members of the Academy's entire voting membership are eligible to vote, and the final five nominees are selected.
The winners of the award are chosen by a vote of the entire Academy membership, and the award is usually presented at the annual Academy Awards ceremony, which is held in late February or early March. Over the years, many great films from all over the world have been honored with this award, and it has become a symbol of the power of cinema to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers.
